Understanding PMTS, Modapts, MOST, and Time & Motion Analysis. (5 อ่าน)

I recently came across an interesting article discussing eRetail Day Guatemala 2025 and BAC’s commitment to barrier-free e-commerce. I appreciated how the article focused on making processes more accessible, efficient, and easier for people to use. It got me thinking about a similar concept in workplace operations: how organizations can identify barriers and unnecessary steps in everyday tasks.

This is where time and motion study becomes particularly interesting.

A time and motion study does more than measure how quickly someone completes a task. It examines the sequence of activities, movements involved, delays, and the overall method used to perform the work. The objective is to understand how a process works and identify opportunities to improve efficiency without simply asking employees to work faster.

One approach worth exploring is PMTS (Predetermined Motion Time System). A Predetermined Motion Time System uses predetermined time values for different types of human movements. Instead of relying entirely on a stopwatch after an employee performs a task, the analyst breaks the job into smaller movements and uses established values to estimate the expected completion time. This can help companies develop consistent work standards for similar operations.

Another method is modapts, which uses basic movement modules to represent the way work is performed. Because the system uses relatively straightforward movement codes, it can be useful when studying repetitive manual operations. A modapts time study can help analysts understand how much time is associated with recurring activities while avoiding unnecessarily complicated analysis.

There is also most, commonly known as the maynard operation sequence technique. Rather than concentrating primarily on individual movements,MOST examines sequences of movements that occur during an operation. The maynard operation sequence technique can therefore be useful when a task follows a recognizable pattern and the analyst wants to estimate standard time efficiently.

This also leads to an interesting comparison of various time motion studies. PMTS, modapts, and MOST approach work at different levels of detail. Some methods are designed to examine individual movements, while others focus more on groups or sequences of movements. The appropriate method depends on the type of operation, the level of accuracy required, and how frequently the analysis needs to be conducted.

For example, a highly detailed manual operation may require a more detailed movement analysis, while a repetitive process with clearly defined sequences could be analyzed more efficiently through a sequence-based technique. The goal should not necessarily be to choose the most detailed method, but to select the method that provides useful information for the specific decision being made.

I think this is an interesting connection between process improvement in digital commerce and operational improvement in the workplace. In both cases, identifying unnecessary barriers can lead to better experiences and more efficient processes.

For anyone studying industrial engineering, operations management, or workplace productivity, learning about PMTS, Predetermined Motion Time System, modapts, modapts time study, most, maynard operation sequence technique, time and motion study, and time and motion provides a useful foundation for understanding how work can be measured and improved.

What methods have others here used for analyzing repetitive work or establishing standard times? I'd be interested to hear whether people have practical experience with PMTS, Modapts, or MOST.
