UK EdTech companies: how do they actually make money and what makes them last? (6 อ่าน)

I was reading about UK EdTech companies and had a question about how the sector actually works, since it is often described as a handful of big names with everyone else struggling to get traction. Here is what I understood from my reading, and I would appreciate anyone correcting me or adding context.

UK EdTech seems to cover a wide mix of businesses, including online learning platforms, tutoring marketplaces, tools for schools, language apps and workplace training providers. Most are based in London, with smaller clusters in Manchester, Edinburgh and Bristol. The sector grew quickly during the pandemic, but the years since look tougher, with slower growth and closer scrutiny from investors.

The customer type seems to decide almost everything. Selling to schools means tight budgets, long procurement cycles and decisions made by headteachers, trusts or local authorities. Selling directly to parents or learners is faster, but acquisition costs are high and retention is hard. Selling to employers offers bigger contracts, though sales cycles can be just as slow. Safeguarding, GDPR and the ICO’s Children’s Code also seem to shape product decisions far more than in other sectors, and the differences between the English, Scottish and Welsh curricula make even the home market feel fragmented.

My question is what separates the UK EdTech companies that last from the ones that struggle, and which customer type founders find most viable. I would also like to know how people manage cash through long school sales cycles, whether SEIS, EIS or Innovate UK grants made a real difference early on, and how investors currently view the sector. Most of what I know so far comes from a breakdown I saw on Entrepreneur Plus, so I would like to hear from anyone who has built or worked in an EdTech company, what they found hardest in the first couple of years, and whether anything caused friction during a later raise.
