My father, on the other hand, was a justified non-believer. His parents were orphans, and he grew up facing a lot of sadness and injustices. Given what he went through, I understand why he believed there was no God.</span>

She followed the tradition most South Americans know: you must fear God, you must go to church, and that blonde, white child in the picture is the son of God&mdash;but you, as a child, are not. You don&rsquo;t realize as a child how deeply that message shapes you.
